A water basin (deumeu) outside Injeongjeon throne hall, in Changdeokgung palace, Seoul, South Korea. The deumeu are placed at either end of the platform (woldae) that the throne hall is built on. They would be filled with water, and were meant to scare away fire demons. When the fire demon, known as Bulgwisin or Hwama, looked in the water it would see its own reflection and be frightened away.
Despite the deumeu, Injeongjeon, which is a wooden structure, has been destroyed by fire and had to rebuilt more than once since it was originally constructed in 1405. Today the deumeu are left empty, with fire extinguishers and fire hydrants located around the palace used to reduce the risk of fire damage.
In the distance can be seen the modern buildings of the Garden Tower and the Hyundai Building.
