Bright pink flowers of a flowering currant (Ribes sanguineum) against a background of bright yellow provided by Golden Bell (Forsythia) flowers.
Ribes sanguineum originates in North America, and was cultivated as a garden plant in 1826 by Scottish botanist David Douglas. It has pink to red flowers, depending on the cultivar, and soft green heart shaped downy leaves. The shrub grows to around 6-9 feet, and flowers in April.
Each raceme of Ribes sanguineum features anywhere from 5 to 30 flowers. The individual flowers are around 5-10mm diameter, with 5 petals.
