A female March fly (Bibionidae sp, possibly Dilophus febrilis) rests on a leaf in mid August.

The common name of Dilophus febrilis is the Fever fly, though there appears to be little reasoning behind this name. They can be found throughout the UK in large numbers from early Spring until as late as October.

Dilophus species can be distinguished from other Bibionidae species by the circlet of spurs at the apex of the fore tibia, and a double collar of spines on the front part of the thorax.
