Ultraviolet photograph of the densely packed flowers of Silver Ragwort (Jacobaea maritima, formerly referred to as Senecio cineraria). The flowers have bright yellow petals with a slightly darker centre under visible light, while in UV the centre appears much darker.
Many insects can see ultraviolet light, and it is believed these differences in the flower's appearance in UV help guide the insects to where the pollen / nectar is located. Hence, these ultraviolet markings are often referred to as 'nectar guides'.
