A female Red Campion (Silene dioica) flower. The male and female flowers are borne on separate plants, the female flower having 5 styles. The flowers have 5 pink coloured petals, each with a deep notch at the end. A large ovoid calyx connects the flower to the stem.
Silene dioica typically grows to a height of around 30-40 cm, though can grow up to 90 cm. It flowers from May to October. The plant prefers damp non-acid soils, and can often be found growing on roadsides in the UK.
