Ultraviolet photo of a female Red Campion (Silene dioica) flower. In ultraviolet the 5 styles at the centre of the female flower appear almost black (whereas in visible light they appear white). The 5 deeply notched petals of the flower, which are a bright pink colour in visible light, appear darker in ultraviolet.
Silene dioica typically grows to a height of around 30-40 cm, though can grow up to 90 cm. It flowers from May to October. The plant prefers damp non-acid soils, and can often be found growing on roadsides in the UK.
