Infrared photo of a female Red Campion (Silene dioica) flower. In infrared the green parts of the plant (the calyx, leaves, and stem) appear much brighter than they do in visible light. The foliage in the background behind the flower also appears much brighter than it does in visible light.
The male and female flowers are borne on separate plants, the female flower having 5 styles. The flowers have 5 pink coloured petals, each with a deep notch at the end. A large ovoid calyx connects the flower to the stem.
Silene dioica typically grows to a height of around 30-40 cm, though can grow up to 90 cm. It flowers from May to October. The plant prefers damp non-acid soils, and can often be found growing on roadsides in the UK.
